Introduction

This page will tell you how to access On-line Journals through the University of Manitoba Libraries portal.

Online Journals are a valuable resource when doing research for any type of work. They provide access to many different articles through on-line journals such as IEEE, ACM and many others.

The University of Manitoba provides access to on-line journals through the E-Library System. The E-Library allows you to search through Journal articles either by Subject or Title. For this course, we will be interested in looking for articles under the Computer Science section in the Subject Area.

This page will describe in detail how to access on-line journals through the E-Library system.

Accessing an On-Line Journal

The E-Library can be accessed through the University of Manitoba Libraries website. This will allow you to access on-line journals.

This example will tell you how to access (and log in) the IEEE website through the U of M portal.

Steps to access the E-Library:

  1. Navigate your web browser to U of M Libraries site.
  2. Click on the E-Library link on the left side navigation bar.

Now we find ourselves at the main page for the E-Library. From here you can choose different options depending on what you need to search for. Since we're looking for on-line journals, we'll be mainly interested in that section.

Steps to access an on-line journal:

  1. Click on the Find Journal Articles link.
  2. In the Select a Subject Area pane, click on the Computer Science link under the Science section.

This next page will show all the journals available to the E-Library that publish Computer Science articles. Most journals allow access to full text articles, but you will need to login with your Library ID to allow access.

  1. Now in the database for Computer Science journals, click on the IEEE/IET Electronic Library link.
  2. Enter your Library ID and your Library PIN. NOTE:Your ID will be set to your 7 digit student number and the PIN will be originally set to your birthday (YYMMDD format). Your PIN must be changed before you can access restricted resources, such as the on-line journals. You can follow instructions on the site on how to change it.
  3. Click on Login to finish logging into the IEEE website.
Congratulations! You are now logged into the IEEE Electronic Library through the U of M portal. Other on-line journals can be accessed in a similar manner, you just need to choose a different one and follow the same steps as above.
