COMP1260 > Computers and Networks

Introduction

Networks at the U of M Network is a connection among objects for the purpose of communication. Computer networks is a connection of computers. The importance has been highly increased not only that most works rely on computers but also that many students has their own laptop. In fact, the University makes 'uofm-secure' be connected by students as well, since they realized 'uofm' wireless connection cannot handle many connections at the same time.

Networks at the U of M

The U of M has subscribed to AT&T Global Network Services. For local access network, U of M use both wired and wireless network. Wired network is implemented with RJ-45 cables common wires used on various places for networking. Every computers in laboratories, offices, and classes are using wired connection; however, there are limitation of this connection. Because U of M wants to prohibit someone who connects without permission, the wired connection is filtered by MAC address. Thus, every computers need to provide MAC address before hand to have wired connection at U of M. On the other hand, there are RJ-45 cable ports for wired connection supporting to students in some laboratory. The places can be found on Information Services and Technology at University of Manitoba web pages. Since these ports are providing to students U of M, then, provides students to connect U of M network as well as internet using routers. There are two types of networks - wired and wireless. RJ-45 cable port are placed in some computer lab. The places of the RJ-45 cable port and wireless router can be found on Information Services and Technology.

Wired Network

At U of M, some labs allow students to have wired connection of their laptop.
