Introduction

Networks at the U of M Network is a connection among objects for the purpose of communication. Computer networks is a connection of computers. The importance has been highly increased not only that most works rely on computers but also that many students has their own laptop. In fact, the University makes 'uofm-secure' be connected by students as well, since they realized 'uofm' wireless connection cannot handle many connections at the same time.

Networks at the U of M

The U of M has subscribed to AT&T Global Network Services. For local access network, U of M use both wired and wireless network. Both of them provided to staffs and students. Wired connection is categorized by providing MAC address or not. Computers in laboratories, offices, and classes are filtered by MAC address. This connection is provided to members of a faculty and staffs. For students, the connection is provided in some computer laboratory. The places can be found on here, the web pages of Information Services and Technology (IST). Although students do not need to provide MAC address, they need to bring their own RJ-45 cable. Wireless connection is opened to every one who has university accounts. There are two provided wireless connections - uofm and uofm-secure. In the old days, uofm was main wireless connection provided to students. Since uofm-secure has been become main wireless connection, uofm becomes temporary connection.

Wired Network

The wired network is typically faster than wireless; however, there is small disadvantage in U of M. That is, staffs need to provide their MAC address which is an unique ID of a network device; Students need to bring their own RJ-45 cable.
